I’m one of those people who won’t watch a YouTube video for weeks or months, and then goes down an internet rabbit hole.
If you ask me, YouTube is one of the safest places online.
Every time I upload a short to my YouTube channel, I have to tell them if it’s made for kids or not.
They even built a whole different platform with parental controls called YouTubeKids! Teens/adults might still have to navigate unhealthy stuff, and there are plenty of weird comments on videos, but overall it’s a pretty safe space.
(Btw, if you’re interested in safe spaces online, I currently send a list of tips for filling your Instagram and Facebook feed with light to everyone who joins my email list.)
Epic YouTube Channel
The best YouTube channels are ones that focus on the LIGHT.
I’m all about helping you fill your life with light, first by focusing on Jesus and second by focusing on good, pure, and lovely things.
This YouTube channel falls into the second category.
It’s a guy who goes to public spaces, sets up a ladder, and tries to guess random people’s careers in two minutes. He calls it the Career Ladder.
And I love it because:
- It’s a space to be interested in people.
- Selflessness isn’t thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less (that’s a quote).
- It’s a lot of fun to watch.
Full disclaimer: I went down this rabbit hole yesterday and watched about fifteen of his short videos, but I haven’t watched all his stuff.
The LIGHT-focused part…
As a sometimes-painfully-awkward person, sometimes I struggle to do ministry.
I try to share the gospel and I fumble over the words. I want to encourage someone, but I’m self-conscious.
Maybe part of the reason I write books, like Beyond the Mirage and Fantastical Summer, is because it’s easier for me to share truth through stories.
Making conversation with people, and being truly interested in them, is a way of loving like Jesus loved.
This YouTuber is good at that (although I don’t know if he’s a Christian or not). And watching his videos is a fun, lighthearted way to learn about people that God made, and what they do for a living.
How I Would Stump This Guy As An Author
If I ever got to do the career ladder, I think I could stump him. Here’s what I’d say:
- I do about 25 different jobs, but they’re all to serve one main job.
- People consume my product online and as a physical item, but they’re the same thing.
- I can work from home 95% of the time, but people in my job sometimes get famous.
- People who buy what I make online often buy a physical copy as well if they’re going to meet me (speaking of book signings, I’ll be in Dover on Saturday)!
What about you? Have you ever seen this guy’s videos? Do you like YouTube? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear what you think.
I also fell down the career ladder hole of youtube for awhile! They are so fun to watch, and I love hearing your description. I do think you would stump him!
