Whimsy seems to be a theme of 2026.
The world could use a little more light and hope, so I’m all for it.
Whimsy makes everything more fun and highlights the little joys that God wove into everyday life. So here are 6 whimsical ways to fill your life with Jesus, the light of the world.
#1. Take the Bible too literally
The Bible actually says to stargaze.
Check out this passage:
Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength,
not one of them is missing.
I think most of the time when people read this verse, they remember that God made everything.
And that’s amazing. But it literally says, “lift up your eyes and look to the heavens.” Doesn’t that sound like stargazing to you?
Pick a day in the next week to go stargazing. Invite people. Read this verse out loud. Think about God calling each star forth by name. That not one of them is missing, because he never has a day where he’s too weak or forgetful to bring them out.
#2. Journal with a Bible verse
I’ve been trying out “junk journaling.”
It’s basically taking all your receipts and random fliers in the mail and cards…all the special little stuff that usually gets thrown away because it doesn’t have a place to go…and turning them into a scrapbook page.
The best part is that it’s not supposed to “look good.” As an antiperfectionist, that’s a plus in my book.
I’ve been making one each Sunday as a way to reflect back on/process each week.
But I want to start writing Bible verses on these pages too. It seems like such a special way to either focus my mind on a specific verse for the next week or search out a verse that applied to a circumstance I faced last week.
Write out a Bible verse in your journal! You can try junk journaling like me, or you can illustrate the verse, or add stickers.
#3. Embrace his creation
Right now, it’s springtime where I live. Flowers are bursting out of the ground. The snow has melted and rivers are rushing and I feel so alive!
But whatever time of year it is, spending time in creation can always point us to the beauty of our creator.
Last Autumn, doing my devotionals in the sunlight boosted my health and this Winter, hearing my social media community’s favorite parts of the snowy season really lifted my spirits.
Go outside. Practice gratitude by saying out loud what you’re thankful for while you’re there.
#4 Watch a movie with Jesus
I’ve tried to figure out the balance between including Jesus in everything I do while not being disrespectful of his sovereignty. I’m not sure if I’ve got it figured out, but here’s one thing I know: Jesus loves us.
If you’re sitting down to watch a movie, think about inviting Jesus into that with you.
The Bible is pretty clear that God likes us to talk to him. So why not tell him what we think of a movie while we’re watching it?
If you watch a movie in the next couple of weeks, try telling God about it afterward. Tell him what you thought/felt/wondered about while you watched. He’s a good, good father.
#5. Go on a prayer/color walk
This is not a repeat of #3, I promise.
Color walks are when you pick out a color before you go on a walk and then notice every shade/hue/object of that color while you walk.
I’ve found this to be a really great way to actually notice the world around me instead of living in my mental to-do list all the time. I almost always finish the walk feeling really grateful for life.
There’s also the old classic: the prayer walk.
My pastor once told me to pray for God’s light to be spread more than I pray against the darkness.
It’s such an effective mental switch, because when we double-down on praying against the demonic forces for the “witchy” person down the street, or the guys smoking weed two doors down, we’re acting like God has less power than he does.
God has so much power that we don’t always have to pray against the darkness. The light is so powerful that praying a blessing over someone (i.e. “Lord, please reveal yourself to them”) can break down strongholds.
Try a color walk or prayer walk!
#6. Read a gripping, whimsical short story
Jesus knew the power of a good story. He told stories (i.e. parables) to crowds all the time.
The Bible itself is the greatest story ever told.
When we engage with a story, it can touch our souls in a way that most things can’t. That’s why I’m passionate about clean fiction.
It’s also why I’m passionate about writing gripping stories (because more Christian books should keep people up until 3 a.m.) and inviting God to slip his light into each of my stories.
Jesus and I snuck the gospel into my story for the Fantastical Summer anthology.
It’s about a cursed girl trapped in a boba shop. I wanted to write about a cursed girl because humanity was cursed at the fall of Adam and Eve.
Brooke is running from her pursuers, from the mistake that kicked her out of paradise, and searching for a way home.
It’s for anyone who’s ever struggled with decision-paralysis. It can feel so hard to just take the next step when you’re not sure if it’s the right one or not.
You can read the story for free when you join my email list. 🙂
What do you think? Are these too whimsical? Have you tried any of them before? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
These are all fire!!! I love the color walk idea, I’ve never heard of it!
It’s really fun!! Let me know when you try it.
