I’m reading this book called Strange Fire, and it’s about how important supernatural stuff is to the Christian walk.
I’m really glad I’m reading it, but the book has one idea that I don’t agree with: it implies that God isn’t whimsical.
What is whimsy?
I don’t know if everyone thinks about the same things when someone says “whimsy,” but a quick Google search defines it as “playfully quaint or fanciful, especially in an appealing and amusing way.”
I’m personally a very whimsical person. (I’m a writer for crying out loud. I play pretend for a living!)
You’re probably whimsical too.
- If you’ve ever been told to get your head out of the clouds, you’re likely whimsical.
- If you’ve ever acted out a scene from a book in your living room, you’re likely whimsical.
- If you loved Anne of Green Gables, you’re likely whimsical.
The thing is, whimsy isn’t living disconnected from reality. It’s not idealistic or naive. It’s intentional. It’s a way to live joyfully.
And joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23), by the way.
Connecting with God through whimsy…
For me, whimsy is a big part of how I connect to God.
I love stargazing. I like to come up with whimsical descriptions of what stars and constellations look like. “Pinpricks in the sky” or “it’s like we’re inside of a globe and the sky’s the glass over top.”
This whimsy leaves me in AWE of GOD. That’s a good thing, right?
If it’s not leading me to sin, the whimsical side of my personality probably isn’t a result of the fall.
We’re made in the image of a good God.
So if we’re whimsical (and it’s not leading us into sin but instead leading us closer to God), it’s not a result of the fall. It’s another way we’re made in the image of God.
Which means that God is whimsical.
Whimsy isn’t idealistic, it’s intentional. It’s a way to live joyfully.
If God is whimsical, then we shouldn’t stunt our whimsy because we think that he doesn’t like it.
We should celebrate our unity with Christ in this area! We should dedicate our whimsy to God’s glory.
I want to make sure I’m not misrepresenting God when I say he’s whimsical, so let’s look at other evidence.
God made narwhals! Fireflies! Weeping willows! Just look at them. Their Creator has to be whimsical.
Why isn’t everyone whimsical?
It’s fair to wonder why everyone in the world isn’t whimsical if we’re all made in the image of God. Here’s my thought: God is so big, so huge, has so many beautiful attributes, that no person but Jesus could ever hold them all.
Some people need to be organized or they can’t think. Some people thrive in creative messiness.
God is both orderly and creative. So it’s not like one of those people is made “more” in the image of God than the other.
They’re just showcasing different attributes of our amazing God!
If you’re one of the whimsical ones, I have something special for you. 🙂 I worked with fourteen other authors to craft a collection of whimsy-filled short stories. You’ll love it!
I love this Vella! I’ve worked in the genre of quirky my whole life which is also whimsical, the plays I’ve written for churches always are presented in such a way that let’s people take their guard down, then they are ready to receive the message with in it
Oh, I love that!
I love this!!!
Thanks Saraina!
Love how even the word “whimsy” is whimsical! Great article.
Me too!!
