I grew up with an intense fear of abandonment.

I was one of those kids who clung to my mom when she wanted to walk out the door, especially if it involved a weekend away.

And that was because when I was little, I was in some unsafe situations that weren’t great for toddlers, so my brother and I were sent away.

Demons…

I don’t want to dive too far into a scary topic, but apparently my fear of abandonment had something to do with demons.

One time I was praying with a friend. This friend didn’t know that abandonment was my deepest fear.

But she stopped praying and asked: “um, do you have a fear of abandonment by any chance?”

I said yes.

She said, “when I prayed for you, I saw a demon on your shoulder. He was gross and ugly and he held a sign that said ‘fear of abandonment.’ Can I pray for it to leave?”

And I said yes please.

Here’s the thing, my fear of abandonment made sense. Even without the crazy demon stories, because of my past experiences, it made sense.

But just because our problems make sense, doesn’t mean they’re worth holding onto.

“Just because our problems make sense, doesn’t mean they’re worth holding onto.”

Yes, traumatic stuff happened. Yes, I’d felt abandoned before and it sucked. Yes, demonic forces were probably involved. BUT GOD is bigger than any of that.

I watched a great video on this recently.

Even better, the amazing people in my life keep reminding me of the awe-inspiring truth that frees us from our problems: God is bigger than trauma or fear. He can overcome it in unimaginable ways.

Bring it to God

Maybe you don’t relate to my fear of abandonment, but I’m sure there’s at least one fear in your life you can’t overcome by yourself.

The fear that makes sense, that brings you to tears, that always leaves you scrambling to retreat into your shell? There’s a simple way to handle it.

While I wrote this article, I felt like I needed music playing in my ears.

And…believe it or not…God brought a song I’d never heard before into the random shuffle. It’s called “Loop Cycle” by The Gray Havens.

I included the song here so you can listen to it while you pray. Bring your fears to God and ask Him to demolish them for you…place them in His hands and declare that you trust Him to take care of them, even in miraculous ways.
